Before the school track meet, Tara and Emek helped choose four runners for the relay team. They studied each runner's three most recent 100-meter times. Arda had times of 14.1, 14.3, and 14.2 seconds; Mina had 13.8, 14.7, and 14.4 seconds; Selin had 14.0, 14.2, and 14.1 seconds; Kerem had 14.3, 14.4, and 14.2 seconds; and Deniz had 13.9, 14.5, and 14.6 seconds. Tara calculated each runner's typical performance using the mean. Emek also compared the ranges by subtracting the fastest time from the slowest time. Mina and Deniz had some very fast races, but their times varied more. Selin's mean was 14.1 seconds with a range of only 0.2 second, while Arda and Kerem were also consistent. After comparing both typical times and variation, Tara and Emek selected Selin, Arda, Kerem, and Mina. Mina's speed earned the final place, while the other three provided the consistency the team needed.
