After several basketball games, Tara and Emek studied graphs of the points scored by two groups of players. Group A had scored 8, 14, 15, 17, and 21 points, while Group B had scored 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. Tara calculated that Group A had a mean of 15 points, compared with 14 points for Group B. At first, the higher average made Group A seem stronger. Emek noticed another important difference. Group A's scores ranged from 8 to 21, giving a range of 13 points, while Group B's range was only 4 points. The graphs showed that Group A sometimes scored very well but also had games with much lower totals. Group B scored slightly fewer points on average, yet its results stayed closer together. Tara and Emek decided that Group A needed more work on consistent scoring. They planned drills to help those players create reliable scoring chances throughout the next game.
