Before the school track meet, Emek and Luna had to recommend either Team A or Team B for the final relay. A graph showed each team's times from five recent races. Team A recorded 61, 57, 59, 63, and 55 seconds, giving a mean of 59 seconds and a range of 8 seconds. Team B recorded 60, 59, 61, 60, and 60 seconds, giving a mean of 60 seconds and a range of only 2 seconds. Emek noticed that Team A was faster on average, but its times varied much more. Luna pointed out that every Team B result was close to 60 seconds, making its performance easier to predict. Because the final required a dependable time to qualify for the next round, they recommended Team B. Their choice was based not only on typical performance but also on how consistently each team had raced.
