Deep in a mountain valley, Emek and Tara followed a trail map toward a hidden base camp before nightfall. The map scale showed that 2.5 centimeters represented 4 kilometers. They had already reached a river crossing, but the next trail segment had lost its distance label. On the map, that segment measured 3.75 centimeters. Tara set up the proportion 2.5/4 = 3.75/x and solved it to find x = 6 kilometers. Beyond that point, two labeled segments of 2.8 kilometers and 1.6 kilometers remained. Emek added the distances and found that they still had 10.4 kilometers to travel. A sign at the river warned that a rocky shortcut would add another 2.3 kilometers because of a recent detour. Since daylight was limited, they stayed on the mapped route instead. Their calculations confirmed the distance they needed to cover, and by keeping a steady pace, Emek and Tara reached the hidden camp just before the valley grew dark.
